(PRWEB) February 26, 2009 -- High school students in Santa Clarita Valley in Los Angeles County, especially those attending school in the William S. Hart High School district, are encouraged to apply for one of twelve high school scholarships being offered by The Henry Mayo Newhall Foundation of San Francisco. Thanks to a $25,000 grant from the Foundation, three high school students will be awarded scholarships to Junior Statesmen summer programs. Nine other eligible L.A. County high school students will be able attend Junior Statesmen Symposia. Offering an academic opportunity to students who are passionate about politics and government, Junior Statesmen programs are considered by many to be an ideal training ground for tomorrow's civic leaders.

One full and two partial scholarships for high school students entering grades nine through twelve will fund attendance at Junior Statesmen Summer School. Hosted annually at Yale, Stanford, Georgetown and Princeton University, these events can be investigated further at the organization's Web site.

In addition to funding for the Summer Programs, nine high school students will be sponsored to attend one of this year's Junior Statesmen Symposia, each hosted by a college. Symposium programs are three- to four-day events focusing on such issues as leadership, politics, media, the Green economy, national security and globalization. Henry Mayo Newhall scholarships are available for students to attend the California Symposium on Politics and the Green Economy, and the Gene A. Burd Symposium on Los Angeles Media and Politics.

"We are very grateful that The Henry Mayo Newhall Foundation has extended this grant to the Junior Statesmen program," says David Viotti, CEO of the Junior Statesmen Foundation. "These scholarships for Santa Clarita Valley high school leaders are a prime example of the Newhall Foundation's continued commitment to fostering political involvement and leadership."

In addition to the Henry Mayo Newhall Foundation scholarships, other high school scholarships are available to qualifying students. The Gerald Garner Memorial Fund, Meese Family Memorial Fund, Alice Tweed Tuohy Foundation, Robert Meyers Scholarship Fund, and donors to the West Contra Costa Initiative also support students interested in Junior State of America involvement.

Those interested in applying for these and other scholarships for high school students, or who would like to donate funds to the Junior Statesmen Foundation, can visit the Junior State of America/Junior Statesmen Foundation Web site for more information.
