AutoSkill Invests in Growth and Development of Latina / Latino School Leaders With Sponsorship of Mentoring Program
Innovative California Program Designed to Increase Latina/Latino School Leaders, Support Retention Enters Sixth Year
Salinas, Calif., and Ottawa (PRWEB) January 29, 2009 -- The California Association of Latino Superintendents and Administrators (CALSA) announced today that AutoSkill International is continuing its commitment to mentoring Latino and Latina school leaders by sponsoring the 2008-2010 Cohort of the CALSA Administrator Mentoring Program. This is the second year that the company has invested in the program designed to increase the number of new Latina and Latino school leaders, as well as support their retention in leadership roles.
"There is strong cultural identification in the Latino community, and our mentoring program builds on that trait to develop educational leaders who will serve as role models for children in California and around the country," said Kenneth R. Magdaleno, mentoring program director and developer and assistant professor, Kremen School of Education and Human Development, California State University, Fresno. "However, we could not be successful without the support of leaders in the education corporate community, such as AutoSkill, who understand the value of supporting the growth and development of Latina and Latino educational leaders."
In 2004, CALSA launched this innovative mentoring program in response to the deep disparity between the number of Latina and Latino students as compared with educational leaders in California schools. At that time, in the public school system, 47 percent of the student population was Latina or Latino, but less than 16 percent of the school leadership was Latina or Latino. Over the last five years, 72 current and future school leaders have participated in the program. Matching veteran leaders with new protégés allows program participants to share common experiences, a common language, and similar racial and equity concerns.
