Bryn Mawr, PA (PRWEB) May 4, 2009 -- The American College is adding a new elective to the most robust and respected credential for financial planning professionals; the prestigious Chartered Financial Consultant® (ChFC®) designation. The course, entitled "HS 342 Executive Compensation," is a new addition to an entirely updated program curriculum.

As the industry's most comprehensive designation for financial planning professionals, the ChFC® designation signifies that professionals have attained the highest level of knowledge and adhere to a strict code of ethics. The program is continuously being improved to maintain the ChFC's standard of excellence.

"The addition of 'Executive Compensation' to the ChFC® designation could not be implemented at a more appropriate time," said Larry Barton, Ph.D., President and Chief Executive Officer of The American College. "The American College maintains the highest level of academic rigor, and the HS 342 furthers students' proficiency as professionals by providing them with the in-depth, high-impact knowledge that consumers' demand and have come to expect from every credential and degree offered by The American College."

The ChFC® designation typically takes several years for a professional to earn, and is the designation by which all other financial planning credentials are measured. This new structure will continue to widen the gap between the ChFC® and other designations. The new course requirements will apply to students starting the program on or after October 1, 2009.

"The new course structure for the ChFC® designation sets an even higher standard in advanced professional education," said Constance Fontaine, JD, LLM, ChFC®, CLU®, holder of the Larry R. Pike Chair in Insurance and Investments and Associate Professor of Taxation at The American College. "Adding the 'Executive Compensation' elective offers an innovative, analytical look into the essentials of high-net-worth executive financial and benefit planning."

The "Executive Compensation" course will focus on exploring the numerous plans used to provide benefits to executives of business firms. Specifically, it will take an in-depth look at matters such as cash-compensation planning, non-qualified deferred-compensation plans, funded deferred-compensation and restricted-property plans, stock options, split-dollar life insurance plans, disability income benefits, and executive fringe benefits.

Since its inception in 1982, more than 45,000 financial planners have earned this advanced credential and its popularity with the profession's best planners continues to grow. As a testament to its growing popularity, the number of ChFC® designations awarded in 2008 was up 18% over the prior year.

The American College is dedicated to leadership in innovative training and development that helps financial services companies and their employees succeed. As a non-profit educational institution holding the highest level of academic accreditation, The College has served as a valued business partner to banks, brokerage firms, insurance companies and others for over 82 years.
