A New Autism Service, 'Ask Doctor Stacy,' Will Provide Support to Parents, Professionals and Caregivers

Family and caregivers of loved ones with autism often suffer from depression, anxiety, and feelings of being lost and overwhelmed. And while media attention, autism societies, and help centers focus on the many new exciting treatment possibilities and research breakthroughs, what these "silent victims" of autism really need is reassuring expertise, live support and follow-up, and a plan of action.

Longmont, CO (PRWEB) April 30, 2009 -- According to Stacy Goresko, Ph.D. and National Speaker on Autism, parents, relatives and caregivers desperately need expert help and assistance before they even decide on an autism treatment, therapy, or "cure." Dr. Goresko, who is a mother of a child with autism and RDI® Program Certified Consultant, works daily with people who are interested in her Family Consulting approach to the disorder. Goresko finds that many of her clients come to her depressed, confused, and overwhelmed by their "options and choices."

Goresko believes this happens because the current system of help centers, with operators pointing people towards their options, is not meeting peoples' fundamental needs. Autism is a complex disorder, families have complex needs, and one kind of treatment approach does not fit all. What she finds time after time is that her clients need immediate help in planning their practical strategies and next steps, and they appreciate her ability to establish a human connection and expertise as she works with them.

Most families, after receiving a diagnosis of Autism, Asperger's Syndrome, or PDD-NOS, are in panic and reactive mode. There is a plethora of information out there on autism but relatively few people can sift through all the material and services and come out with a coherent understanding of what it all means and where to go from there. They really have no idea what life is going to be like from this moment forward. Goresko states, "families are often put in the situation of 'hoping for the best' and do not have the tools they need to make critical life decisions for their loved one(s), nor do they know the first thing about how to advocate for their child."

Building on this lack of family support, Goresko plans to implement an "Ask Dr. Stacy" service of outreach to people in need of this kind of assistance. Several days a month, through group conference calls and Skype, Goresko will speak live in person with people who seek answers and assistance to their most pressing questions and problems about autism, at no charge. Family members will have the opportunity to tell their stories and seek advice. The focus of these live sessions will be to help caregivers brainstorm and develop a plan of action. They will have the opportunity to talk to someone who cares, is passionate about helping families, and has been there herself. For families seeking support, this can make all the difference in the world.
