Pearson Convenes Leading Experts to Address Teacher Education Issues

Symposium Focuses on 21st Century Teaching, Psychological Needs, Classroom Technology, and State Licensure

Pittsburgh, PA (PRWEB) March 27, 2009 -- Today's economic crisis has focused a critical lens on the importance of a quality education. With one-third of students failing to graduate from high school on time, and more than 20 percent of college freshman taking at least one remedial course, educators of teachers are searching for solutions that will impact these glum statistics.

Pearson, the world's leading education publishing and technology company, has convened a meeting of the Pittsburgh region's leading education experts to address these issues. The Pearson Education Symposium, held at the Regional Learning Alliance in Cranberry Township, Pa., brings together nearly 50 college faculty, instructors and administrators to discuss best practices for meeting the needs of future and current teachers and their students.

"Improving the quality of education is a core tenet of Pearson's mission to improve lives around the world through education," said Nancy Forsyth, president of Pearson Teacher Education and Student Success. "We continue to invest in proven, research-based content and learning solutions to help teachers teach and students learn. Our education symposium is intended to help teachers, administrators and college faculty to build a support community to prepare the teachers of tomorrow for meeting the complex needs of today's students and classrooms."

Highlights of the agenda include a presentation by Kathleen Fulton of the National Commission on Teaching and America's Future (NCTAF), who will discuss the need to create teachers prepared to handle the needs of 21st Century learners. Pearson and NCTAF recently announced an exclusive partnership to launch a new online learning community designed to support teacher candidates and novice teachers with a broad network of mentors and experienced talent, and to connect colleges of education with their K-12 district partners. The partnership builds upon NCTAF's successful Teachers Learning in Networked Communities (TLINC) program.

Other presenters include Dr. Mary Margaret Kerr of the University of Pittsburgh, who will discuss the psychological needs of today's teachers and students; and Rebecca Badgett of Slippery Rock University, who will focus on the importance of integrating technology into the classroom. The symposium also includes a panel discussion about upcoming changes to the state of Pennsylvania's teacher licensure law.

Pearson's Teacher Education & Development group covers the continuum with content and services that represent the research and knowledge of America's leading education researchers. Among the company's respected higher education imprints are Allyn & Bacon and Merrill, which offer print, digital and hybrid tools and resources that effectively blend academic research and practical applications for today's K12 educators and for the students who will be tomorrow's teachers.

Pearson's research-based professional development services for teachers include Learning Teams, an evidence-based, collaborative model that brings together teachers to learn from each other, refine their skills to improve student performance and self-assess their progress; and the Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP), a groundbreaking approach to teaching English language learners that uses "sheltered instruction" to teach subjects such as math, science or social studies in a way that makes the concepts easier to understand, while at the same time strengthening a student's academic English language development.
